A recent editorial suggests that the nonpartisan League of Women Voters and the ACLU have a hidden agenda for supporting Amendment 4 ["On voting, felons should get a break, but Amendment 4 needs more discussion," Sept. 21].
It says that, allegedly, Republicans believe that the majority of felons may register as Democrats. The LWV and the ACLU’s true motives are universal suffrage and justice.
Amendment 4 will restore voting rights for free felons, except for murderers and sex offenders. For the last eight years, the governor and the Cabinet, restored only 3,000, while 1.6 million felons still can’t vote. This policy is punitive. Isn’t the judicial system supposed to support felons to successfully return to society? Recidivism is lower among voting felons. Voting recognizes citizenship.
For 98 years, the League has defended all citizens to vote. Women vote today because of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. In 1965, blacks won protections to vote with the Voting Rights Act. The ACLU has defended the First Amendment rights of the KKK and neo-Nazi groups to gather and speak publicly and peacefully.
Vote for Amendment 4!
