“I wanted it to be like a big jungle gym for adults,” said NS Mayport Fitness Director Steve Carman as he described MWR’s newest fitness addition.

The Mayport NOFFS Zone, named after the Navy Operation Fitness and Fueling System, was built after MWR held a Command Fitness Leader (CFL) Summit last year that includes CFLs from multiple Mayport commands.

“We had a CFL Summit and [told the attendees], ‘We have this idea for an outdoor area,’” Carman said. “We had books there and things they could check off. With that we were able to put together this amazing area.”

First slated to be a new tennis court, Carman said the Fitness team knew that it would get more use as a multi-exercise area.

Set to have its ribbon cutting on Jan. 31, the workout area is located beside the Mayport Fitness Center and features a large multi-use metal Ninja Warrior course, platforms and a large container filled with attachments and workout aids.

The NOFFS zone was built with High Intensity Training (HIT) and group training in mind, Carman added. CFLs can use the area for small group training by reserving the space as they would an indoor room at the Fitness Center, he said.

“This area is open even when the fitness center isn’t open,” Carman said. “It’s always available for people to come out and do calisthenics, push ups, pull ups - things like that.”

Plus, with Florida’s mild weather, it is a year round fitness area.

“Suns out, guns out,” Carman said. “We wanted to also include a muscle beach area where people could be pushing sleds and flipping tires.”

While the outdoor NOFFS Zone is always open, Carman said the container will only be open during Fitness Center hours, from dawn to dusk. Fitness employees will open the container and monitor its use.
