After sitting empty for more than a year, Building 1596 will have new tenants some time this Summer.

Naval Station Mayport Commanding Officer, Capt. David Yoder, announced last week that Panda Express and Au Bon Pain restaurants will occupy the space formerly held by McDonald's.

Navy Exchange Mayport Director Bill Hockenbury also confirmed the restaurants co-location in the area. The restaurants were formally notified of the award of contract on Jan. 25.

Yoder said there will be some modifications done to the building to come in line with the Panda Express/Au Bon Pain concept. A grand opening is expected some time in June or July, Hockenbury said.

Yoder also said once the renovations begin, the parking area surrounding the building will be closed.

Au Bon Pain is an American fast-casual bakery and café chain that focuses on "good for you" ingredients and chef inspired flavors.

Panda Express is a fast casual restaurant chain which serves American Chinese cuisine. It is the largest Asian segment restaurant chain in the United States.

Building 1596 has been empty since McDonald's closed down in October 2015.
