Cmdr. Bradford Crain will assume command of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 48 from Cmdr. Jeffrey Hill on Nov. 18. 

Hill assumed command of the HSM-48 Vipers in August 2015. During his tenure as commanding officer, HSM 48 stood up five fully mission capable detachments. The squadron's hard work was rewarded with 2015 SECNAV Energy and Water Management Award, 2015 Blue 'M' for Readiness, the 2015 Retention Excellence Award and the 2016 Battle 'E'.

Hill earned his commission through Officer Candidate School at NAS Pensacola, Florida.  His career has included tours with HSL-44, a tour as a Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (SWTI) at the Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School Atlantic, a tour at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee, and assignment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J-36, serving as Assistant Deputy Director for Operations. Hill's next assignment will be with the JCS J2/Defense Intelligence Agency.

Crain, a native of Windham, Maine, enlisted in the Navy in January of 1991 as a Nuclear Power Electrician's Mate. He was selected for the ROTC program, attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute earning a BS in Electrical Engineering and a commission in the Navy.  His career has included operational tours with HSL-46, USS Tarawa, HSL-45 and HSM-75. He has served ashore as a Fleet Replacement Squadron instructor at HSL-41 and with NATO Joint Force Command Headquarters Naples, Italy as an Operations, Plans and Policy writer and Executive Assistant supporting Assistant Chief of Staff (ACOS) J3 and the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) Operations. Crain has been the executive officer of HSM-48 since August 2015. 

Cmdr. Gregory Brown, previously assigned to United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), Special Operations Acquisition Training and Logistics (SOF AT&L), will take over as Viper Executive Officer.
