Mayport VQ Receives Zumwalt Award

Navy Gateway Inns and Suites Visitors Quarters (VQ) was recently awarded its third Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Award for Excellence. Held in New York in conjunction with the 2006 hotel and restaurant international convention, the award was presented in recognition of superior service and hospitality.

In a repeat ceremony held at the Ocean Breeze Conference, Naval Station Mayport's Commanding Officer, Capt. Charlie King, presented the award he accepted on behalf of the Gateway Inns and Suites staff.

''We wanted to share this award with all the employees that are working at the visitors quarters complex in order to show our appreciation for all their hard work in order to obtain this award,'' said King.

A lot of work goes into making the VQ, which consists of two separate buildings with the purpose of housing 245 personnel, along with two flag officer suites, eligible to receive the Zumwalt Award.

''It was a challenge,'' said Ina Colmorgen, Visitors Quarters Manager. ''We had an assist visit prior to the award and there were some things that we needed to correct which we were able to do and that makes us feel great.''

The VQ's motto of ''Today's preparation determines tomorrow's achievements.'' is a testament to the hard work and dedication that will keep the tradition of winning such a prestigious award alive well into the future.
