More than two years after construction began at the Mayport commissary, shoppers are treated to a welcome sight - a newly-designed store.

Nov. 7 marked the grand re-opening of the commissary after a $12.5 million ''addition alteration project,'' in which an existing building is altered, and in the case of Mayport's commissary, expanded, said John Blythe Sr., store director.

''It's unbelievable,'' said Blythe. ''The customers have so many compliments.

''After dealing with the construction and still coming in to shop, it must be like a breath of fresh air for them.''

Some of the newest additions to the store include a ''Grab and Go'' section near the front entrance, where shoppers in a hurry can pick up ready-made sandwiches and other ''fast food.'' In addition, a sushi chef is featured daily and the commissary features a fresh seafood department.

''My personal favorites are the expansion of the frozen and dairy sections,'' said Blythe. ''The warehouse was expanded, and we now have a larger admin section with more space.'' The store also features new signage and aisle set-up.

The grand re-opening was highlighted by the giveaway of $15,000 in free Proctor & Gamble products, in which a company representative purchased the items in the store and then handed out vouchers to customers as they entered the store. Also, the Tide racing car simulator made an appearance.

Free samples were in abundance throughout, as ''all major manufacturers were having giveaways,'' said Blythe. The store is featuring specials on Coke and 7-Up products, Gatorade, and General Mills cereals. Furthermore, Thanks-giving and Christmas items are now on display, and specials on chicken are just some of the many offers available.

''It's a total renovation,'' said Blythe. ''It's fantastic.''
