The Mayport Hurricanes were lead to victory by former All Navy Coach CWO2 Allan Layne in the Tri-Base Basketball Tournament held last Saturday at Naval Station Mayport.

Quartermaster 2nd Class James Milt from Jacksonville Recruiting District Command led the way in scoring for the weekend tournament with an average of 26 points per game. The game could not be decided by offense alone but with tenacious defense and rebounding by Coast Guard Electrician's Mate 2nd Class Jason Lockhart, Personnel Specialist 3rd Class Decandrein Dunn of PSD and Hospital Corpsman Jeremy Olds of Branch Medical. We had great floor management from Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Jerome McKenzie of HSL-48, and Fire Controlman 1st Class Kenroy Edwards, Operations Specialist Seaman Demarcus Lewis, Seaman Warren Northrop, Seaman Jeremy Anthony all of USS Vicksburg, which provided instrumental play and teamwork throughout the tournament. The hard work and skill level paid off for the Mayport Hurricanes as they were undefeated for the tournament.

With the inaugural tip off of the Tri-Base basketball tournament the Hurricanes were determined to keep the traveling trophy at the home port of Mayport making it the 2nd event for the year as the Mayport Hurricanes softball team also recently won the Tri-Base event at Subase Kings Bay.

The final event for the Tri-Base tournament series will be Flag Football coming up this September. Any active duty members interested in participating on any of the Naval Station Mayport Varsity teams can contact Rita Hammerstad in the gym at 904-270-5451.
