First-grader Adam Martinez drew a picture of his mother and father for his winning artwork. Martinez is the son of Julio and Sue Martinez.

The winners are in for this year's Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) art and essay contest in support of April's Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The art contest was for children ages 4-17 and this year's theme was ''Children Need Everyday Heroes.''

There was also an essay contest for children ages 6-17. The theme for the contest was ''What it means to be a hero.''

Winners in the art contest were Ashley Morgan, Zay'sha Stubbs, Adam Martinez and Lydsay Dickson. Savannah Clinton was a winner in both the art contest and essay contest.

Second-place winners in the art contest were Briana Martinez, Angela Mabini, Kayla Turner, Kelly Martin, Haylee Harmon. Third-place winners were Jamia Cooper, Ashleigh Clinton, William Martinez.

Second place in essay was Armani Haley. Jameria Anderson received third place.

Each week, child protective services throughout the United States receive more than 50,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. In 2002, 2.6 million reports concerning the welfare of approximately 4.5 million children were made. An average of nearly four children die every day as a result of child abuse or neglect.

In approximately two-thirds, or 67 percent, of these cases, the information provided in the report was sufficient to prompt an assessment or investigation. As a result of these investigations, approximately 896,000 children were found to have been victims of abuse or neglect - an average of more that 2,450 children per day.

More than half, 60 percent, of victims experienced neglect, meaning a caretaker failed to provide for the child's basic needs.

Boys and girls are about equally likely to be abused or neglected. Children of all ages experience abuse and neglect, but the youngest children are most vulnerable.
