Klakring Hits 'Gate' Running
|
||
A group of Klakring Sailors had been training since January for the event after the crew's Command Master Chief, CMDCM Richard "Deano" Dean had put out word searching for people interested in training for the race. Despite many competing requirements for their time as Klakring underwent an intensive pre-INSURV CMAV availability, these dedicated athletes maintained a robust training regimen that paid off on race day.
While a handful of the Sailors had competed competitively before in distance races, up to and including marathons, for others, the 9.3 mile course was their most ambitious undertaking yet. The gale-force winds and rain whipping across the Hart Bridge may have dampened their jerseys, but did nothing to dampen their spirits as everyone crossed the finish line.
For Klakring's Training Officer Lt.j.g. David Osburn, the Gate River Run was his first distance race of any kind.
"This was a lot more difficult than I expected it to be, but the motivation from the fans lining the streets more than made up for it," he said.
Undaunted by the weather, he turned in a time of 1:30:20.
"I'm now hoping to run a half marathon in the next couple months, and perhaps a marathon within the year, we'll see."
Klakring's runners will be deployed during next year's event, but are already making plans to sponsor a river run of their own
