Sailor Becomes Citizen

Ship Serviceman 2nd Class Eustace Kwapong recently became the United States' newest citizen.

Growing up in Accra, Ghana, Kwapong moved to the United States 15 years ago.

Upon visiting the country, he immediately fell in love with the Big Apple and decided to move to New York City.

In 2003, Kwapong decided to continue his travels around the world and joined the Navy.

Kwapong leaves USS Taylor in February after serving on board for two deployments. He beamed with pride as he reflected on achieving U.S. citizenship.

"Earning US citizenship was a proud moment for me and for my family," he said. "I am grateful to live and serve in a country where so much opportunity exists."

Kwapong was recognized by the Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Kurush Morris, at a Taylor awards ceremony and presented an American flag. He said he hopes to continue his naval career by one day becoming a commissioned officer.

Three of Kwapong's six siblings currently live in the United States, while his parents still reside in Ghana.
