The Mayport Mud Run is an annual obstacle-course race organized by MWR on Naval Station Mayport. The Fitness Center hosted its first Mud Run in 2015 in response to the popularity of obstacle runs across the globe. This year, the Mayport Mud Run will be held on Saturday, August 18 at the Sea Otter Pavilion.

“It’s perfect for the first time obstacle run participant,” stated Athletic Director, Steve Carman. “It’s is challenging for the athlete too.”

The youth race starts at 8am and is recommended for children 8 to 13 years old. The adult race starts at 9am, and waves of 50 participants will leave every 10 minutes. Runners who don’t want to do an obstacle can simply do 10 jumping jacks instead.

“Even the skipper of the base did 10 jumping jacks when he fell off the balance beam last year,” Carman said.

All adults receive a medal, t-shirt, and complementary beer for participating in the race. Children receive a medal and get to play in the foam pit and kids zone at the end of the race. The after party includes a live band, snacks, and photo ops, with drinks and breakfast burritos available for purchase.

Returning to the Mayport Mud Run are crowd favorites like the giant slip and slide, mud pits, cargo net climb, sandbag slog, balance beam, and ice bath. New obstacles include the Hercules hoist and vertical walls. In total, there will be 27 obstacles in addition to the two mud pits.

“The Seabees at NAS Jacksonville are helping build the new vertical walls for the course.” Carman added, “The whole military community comes together to make this happen.”

Volunteers are also needed to help work the event. Volunteers receive a volunteer letter which can be applied for active duty, school, or scholarship volunteer hours. After the event is over, volunteers can run the course for free and partake in a pizza party. People who are interested in volunteering can sign up at the Fitness Center.

The fun doesn’t stop when the race is over. MWR Mayport will host two more events on the muddy route. Mud Run Elite, an annual command competition, is on Wednesday, August 22, and Mud Volleyball, a family event, is on Saturday, August 25 at 8 a.m.

The Mayport Mud Run is only $15 per adult, $10 per child, and $25 per guest when people register in advance at the Fitness Center. Prices will increase by $5 on race day, space permitting.

“The Mud Run sold out last year,” Carman explained, “so we encourage people to sign up as early as possible.”
