The doors officially opened for the long awaited Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Freedom-variant Integrated Tactical Trainer (ITT) at the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) LCS Training Facility (LTF) Mayport onboard Naval Station Mayport on Jun. 22. This ITT is a full-scale simulation based on exact replicas of the Freedom variant bridge, bridge wings, mission control center, and crew served weapons stations.
In celebration of this monumental day at CSCS Det Mayport, a Friends and Family Day event was hosted to show off the new trainer. Over 200 friends and families of personnel from CSCS Det Mayport, Training Support Detachment Mayport, and Surface Warfare Officers School Command (SWOS) Det Mayport enjoyed the simulator in action with bridge watch standers driving the ship and gun operators engaging small boats with .50 caliber machine guns. Guests also toured the mission control center and instructor control station.
The ITT will soon be supporting the LCS training pipeline with both Capstone and Crew Certification events. These courses will provide integrated crew training, individual watch station qualification, and warfare area certifications for LCS crews prior to deployment.
The LTF Mayport is being built in three phases. The first phase is now complete with the opening of the ITT. The second phase, expected to be finished this December, will add five 24-seat virtual reality labs for engineering, combat systems, and deck operations training, and a Freedom-variant mission bay trainer for live deck operations training. The final phase, which is expected to achieve initial operational capability in 2021, will provide additional ITTs to meet the training demands for 26 LCS crews in Mayport.
The LCS training courses at LTF are taught by instructors from CSCS, SWOS and the Center for Information Warfare Training. The facility is managed by CSCS.
