REDDICK — The driver of a semi escaped unarmed Thursday night after the cab caught fire while driving on the interstate.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the driver was traveling southbound on I-75 when he noticed smoke coming from the back.

Troopers said the driver pulled over and got out of the big rig. Authorities said the cab was a total loss and the blaze burned part of the trailer. The incident, which blocked the highway's right lane, occurred roughly a mile north of County Road 318.

While officials said the fire is under investigation, troopers said the fire may have come from the fuel spray. Troopers were notified about the fire at 9:36 p.m.

FHP officials said the driver had left Georgia and was traveling to Miami with food items.
