USS De Wert

Crew members of USS De Wert (FFG 45) took some time from their decommissioning duties to assist Habitat for Humanity.

After an early morning safety meeting at the Habitat headquarters, the Sailors joined the other volunteers at the worksite.

"It's a lot of fun to be doing work that helps people. Plus we get to be outdoors and they even let us use power tools!" Chief Operations Specialist (SW) Steven Smothers said.

The Sailors were split into teams. The first team cut the wood down on a circular saw. Their work was nailed to uncut lumber boards by the second team to create "jacks" that would be used in framing the first floor walls.

At the end of the day the De Wert crew had built five walls and enough extra jacks for several more walls to be completed at a later date, completing a very successful event for the Sailors and Habitat for Humanity.
