Boone Stops Smugglers, Helps 26

USS Boone and embarked HSL-48 Detachment Five intercepted a drug-smuggling speedboat Aug. 24 while en route from Algeria to Spain during a patrol of the Mediterranean Sea south of the Spanish coastline. [ More ]


Bataan, Mayport Ships ESG Begin Workups
The Norfolk based multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) got underway from Naval Station Norfolk Aug. 15 with elements from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (26 MEU) to begin Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) pre-deployment training.

HSLs Get First Hand Knowledge Of Hellfire Missile
The extraordinary efforts of the HSL-46 operations and maintenance departments led to a successful Greyfox III exercise. From Aug. 7-10, 14 Hellfire missiles were shot off the coast of Jacksonville, 10 of which were launched from HSL-46 aircraft.

Panama Welcomes PANAMAX 2006
Under tropical skies, navy ships from three nations sailed in to piers at the former Rodman Base, Panama in support of exercise PANAMAX 2006. The ships become part of a larger multi-national force set to participate in this year's exercise, scheduled to run from August 24-31, 2006.

PANAMAX 2006 Reaches Out To Community
Take a long winding road through the hills on the outskirts of any Panamanian town or travel just a few miles outside of the piers and you can find small buildings that might be mistaken as being abandoned. For the past few days though ships participating in PANAMAX 2006 reached out to local communities and help build, paint, build walls as part of a Community Relations event for a school and athletic center. Civil, naval and air forces from 18 countries have gathered in Panama to conduct PANAMAX 2006, a multi-national training event for the defense of the Panama Canal.
