VITA Starts Jan. 28
NS Mayport is gearing up to open the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) tax center to provide free basic tax preparation services starting Jan. 28.

New CO For Underwood
Command of the Mayport based Frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36) changed hands Jan. 18, when Cmdr. Wesley A. Smith relieved Cmdr. Thomas L. Dearborn. The ceremony was held on board Underwood, pier side at Naval Station Mayport, with Commodore Thomas L. Reese, Commander, Destroyer Squadron 14, presiding.

USS Vicksburg Leads Group Home
USS Vicksburg (CG-69), with HSL-42 Detachment 5, is transiting home across the Atlantic as a Surface Action Group (SAG) Commander leading four ships of the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG). USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), and its embarked staff, remained behind in the Mediterranean Sea conducting a special mission and tasked USS Vicksburg to escort the remainder of the strike group home. Vicksburg assumed Tactical Control (TACON) of the four ships on Jan. 15. The most challenging aspect of the transit is negotiating Mother Nature's North Atlantic challenges. The Vicksburg SAG has been diverted away from three heaving storms during this transit, some with waves in excess of 30 feet.
